New Water Park Opens in Chincoteague

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.- A new way to cool off this summer has arrived in Chincoteague. Maui Jack's is the brand new water park now open to the public on the island.

The park has been in the works for nearly two years. Ground officially broke on the project back in November, but the road to getting everything built on time came with its challenges.

"Weather was the biggest problem we had. We had a very bad January, February, and March with the rain and the snow and the cold weather," the park's architect, Mike O'Neill said.

The entire park was complete just in time for its grand opening on Friday.

The slides were among some of the crowd favorites, kids squealed with laughter as they splashed into the cool water at the mouth of the slide.

Maui Jack's isn't only kid approved, it's practical for parents. The park explained they kept people of all ages in mind throughout the entire design process.

"The entire design is circular, so the moms can see all their kids at all times," O'Neill said.

And they have various amenities to please everyone from toddlers to grandparents.

"We have speed slides for those who are more adventurous, regular body slide, and my personal favorite, the lazy river," Blue Water Hospitality Director of Sales, Kim Wootteon said.

A total of 314,000 thousand gallons of water flows throughout the park. Cabanas line the perimeter of the park, dispensers with free sunscreen are scattered about, and a tiki bar stands off to the side.

The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday until Labor Day, and on weekends throughout the month of September.
