DELMAR, Del.- A 34-year-old Pocomoke City man suffered life-threatening injuries after an accident at the Delmar Speedway on Saturday.
According to Delaware State Police, the speedway was closed to the public at the time of the accident, and was only open to drivers. Police say the driver was in the left lane making a timed pass by himself when he hit the eighth mile mark at a high rate of speed and lost control. Police say the 1995 Ford Mustang drag car struck a guard rail, the finish line post and then barrel rolled before stopping upside down.
Police say the driver was wearing a helmet and safety belts during the accident. He was flown with serious, life-threatening injuries to Christiana Hospital, according to authorities.
Police are classifying the incident as an industrial accident and are still investigating.
