Police Respond Fight at Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach

DEWEY BEACH, Del. -- The Dewey Beach Police Department is reporting a fight that broke out earlier Sunday morning at a local restaurant.

Police say at around 1:00 a.m., authorities were called to respond to a disorderly crowd at the Rusty Rudder Restaurant, after a fight broke out between the crowd and security staff. When officers arrived on the scene, police say the crowd grew to approximately 30 individuals. After several people were asked to leave the restaurant, they were escorted by police to Dickinson Street. Police say when other patrons refused to disperse, an altercation between the crowd and police broke out.

Several officers were exposed to pepper spray, with one officer injured after an unknown object hit him in the head during the altercation. Police say the injured officer was not hospitalized, but was treated on the scene. Officers from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department arrived on the scene to assist Dewey Police. Several subjects were arrested, but Dewey Police say they were released because of uncooperative victims.
