REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Two local groups are petitioning the City of Rehoboth Beach to ban single use plastics. The topic has gotten the attention of city commissioners and the city's Environmental Committee as well.
In late December, the group Save Our Lakes Alliance Three and the Rehoboth Beach Homeowners Association formally requested the city ban items like straws, bags, and takeout materials like styrofoam.
A plastics ban was discussed on Friday's Environmental Committee Meeting, with committee members weighing a total ban versus a fee or educational program. Some suggested banning disposable water bottles as well.
The committee plans to hear from the group Plastic Free Delaware at a future meeting, and hopes to get good recycling going on the boardwalk this summer.
"We'll just start off with the boardwalk part of things because I think it's a little easier," said Chair Charlie Garlow. "They have the little trucks that go along with a trailer behind--they now pull out the trash and plastic bag and just throw it in the back end of that trailer. They can take care of it pretty easily that way. I think it's a little more difficult on the sand."
