GEORGETOWN, Del. – The First State Community Action Agency continues to help install free air conditioners for eligible low-income people.
Through Summer Cooling Assistance Program, anyone who falls at least 200% under the poverty guideline, is eligibly to apply for an AC unit.
“We saw a need that individuals were having a really difficult time in the communities we serve,” said Bernice Edwards, Executive Director of the agency.
The process doesn't take long. Those who are eligible usually receive their new ac installed within 48 hours after applying.
The agency uses private contractors who come to the home, and selects the best and most cost effective unit for the type of home.
The First State Community Action Agency says it prioritizes people with children and senior citizens.
As of Thursday, the summer cooling assistance program had installed more than 110 units in Delaware, 55 of which were in Sussex County.
The program runs through September. To apply, call 302-856-7761.
