OCEAN CITY, Md- A weekend where high winds work in your favor. Thursday is the first day of the Sunfest Kite Festival hosted by The Kite Loft in Ocean City.
"They're easy easy to fly. The days of running down the beach and having to launch a kite are over. Just hold it to the wind, the wind takes it up in the air and everyone is happy," said Jay Knerr, co-owner of The Kite Loft.
People with The Kite Loft say it's the perfect, socially distanced event. Those flying kites have to stay at least 6-feet apart to ensure the lines on the kites don't get tangled.
Each day of the event will have a theme. Friday is Feline Friday with cat themed kites. Saturday is Sea-Life Saturday.
"And then we have some unusually kites called trilobite. They look like ancient fossils. Very strange looking but they look great in the air. They're large and impressive," said Knerr.
Through the weekend more experienced flyers are coming together to put on a show, showing off kite tricks and treats.
"We're going to be flying team, where we will fly just like square dancing, where we do different routines. It's going to be awesome," said experienced kite flyer, Paul Dugard from Silver Spring, Maryland.
Even if you're just watching from the sidelines, you can play a part in the festival.
"We have the peoples choice awards where people on the boardwalk can participate by voting for which kite is the best, most unusual, coolest, or whatever, and we reward the person flying that kite with a prize and a gift certificate," said Knerr.
The Sunfest Kite Festival runs until Sunday evening. It is free to the public.
