Update: Driver Charged in Deadly Crash

Nour-Eddine H. Baassiri, 31 of Salisbury, Maryland,

LAUREL, Del.-  A Salisbury man is facing charges after a deadly crash in Laurel last week.

Police say 31-year-old Nour-Eddine H. Baassiri of Salisbury was driving northbound on US 13 just south of Salt Barn Road when the car went off the left side of the road and into the median where it slid out of control. According to police, the car then entered the southbound lanes and was struck by another car driven by 42-year-old Robert W. Truitt of Pennsylvania.. Police say Baassiri's car then rotated before coming to a stop.

 

Baassiri, who was properly restrained, was transported by EMS to Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) where he as of Wednesday afternoon he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  Upon his release, police say he will be charged with two counts of Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death, Inattentive Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, and a Seatbelt Violation.

 

28-year-old Dewit Yewendwosen Teferi of Ocean City, who was a passenger in Baassiri's vehicle,  was not properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene.  

 

Police say Truitt was properly restrained and removed from the scene by EMS.  He was transported to PRMC where he later died from his injuries.  Family of Truitt tell WBOC he was traveling to Delmarva to be with his family for Christmas.

 The Delaware State Police have charged the operator the Ford Taurus involved in the December 23, 2015 crash that occurred south of Laurel.

 Baassiri was extradited back to Delaware on Tuesday, December 29, and charged with two counts of operation of a motor vehicle causing death, inattentive driving, failure to maintain lane, and a seatbelt violation.  He was arraigned at JP2 and released on $4,075 unsecured bond.
