Va. Sets 35 Mph Speed Limit on Unpaved Roads

RICHMOND, Va. (WBOC/AP)- A 35 mph speed limit is now in effect on unpaved roads across Virginia.

Drivers had been allowed to travel up to 55 mph, but that changed Tuesday when a new state law hit the books. The Virginia Department of Transportation proposed the lower speed limit.

"The revision to speed limits on all unpaved roads will cause less confusion for motorists," said VDOT Chief Engineer Garrett Moore. "A lower speed limit of 35 mph is a reasonable and safer speed limit for unpaved roads across the state."

The law does not require VDOT to post speed limits on unpaved roads. The department is working with the Department of Motor Vehicles to educate drivers on the new limit.
