WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - Voters in Wicomico County made their voices heard and approved some revisions to the county charter.
The ballot for Wicomico County voters was a little longer than normal for this election because of the nine charter amendment questions. The questions ranged from simple house keeping measures in the Wicomico County government to defining the rules of reorganizing county departments.
Voters agreed to all nine amendments on election night with the lowest winning percentage for an amendment being 62%, with the highest winning percentage at 77%. The vote in favor of all the amendments was welcomed news for the county council.
"We're very pleased to see the public support the council's effort as far as the charter amendments were concerned. The council put an awful lot of time and effort into it to make sure we had what we thought was a great package to make the government much better in Wicomico County," said County Council President, John Cannon.
Included in the amendments was a requirement for special elections in certain situations to changing the role of the county attorney representing the council. While the county council proposed and supported these amendments, County Executive Bob Culver did not. Culver said last week that while he was not against the context of the amendments, he believed the amendments were placed on the ballot without enough public input before a vote.
On Wednesday, Culver said he was pleased to see 66% of the registered voters in the county come out and voice their opinions and quote: "The voters have spoken regarding the changes to the Wicomico County Charter and we will now analyze the amendment’s effect of the operations of the County."
The amendments to the county charter in Wicomico County will take effect 30 days after election day.
