DOVER, Del.- A homicide investigation is underway in Dover after a woman was found shot in the head inside a car early Wednesday morning.
Dover police said that just after midnight officers responded to the area of South DuPont Highway and Loockerman Street for a report of a vehicle crash after a black Dodge Challenger struck a sign on the northwest corner of the intersection.
When officers arrived, they located 27-year-old Uniqua Caldwell, of Dover, in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the head. Caldwell was transported to Kent General Hospital by ambulance where she was later pronounced deceased as a result of her injuries. Witnesses in the area told police they observed a man and a woman get out of the vehicle and run in an eastbound direction.
Caldwell's death was Dover's second homicide in two days. At around 3 a.m. Monday, the body of 32-year-old Thomas Gilbert, of Dover, was found in a vacant lot in the 100 block of South New Street. The investigation into his death found that Gilbert had been struck multiple times by gunfire. Police have not yet identified any suspects in that case.
Both homicides remain under investigation and anyone with information about either one, or both, is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at 302-736-7130. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be submitted to law enforcement through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or online at delawarecrimestoppers.com; a cash reward of up to $1,000 is possible for information leading to an arrest in either case.
