MARYLAND - Maryland’s Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen have announced $650,000 of funding aimed to bolster mentoring programs for youth affected by substance misuse on the Eastern Shore.

Cardin and Van Hollen say the funding was secured through the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention and are planned to benefit children, their families, and communities on the State’s Eastern Shore impacted by drugs, especially opioids.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore will use the funds to partner with local health departments in order to provide seminars and preventative training on opioid and drug use, the Senators said.

According to Cardin and Van Hollen, the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention strives to especially assist youth and families in historically marginalized and underserved communities who would benefit the most from drug prevention and intervention.
