California is partnering with a New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company to purchase a generic version of Narcan, the most well-known version of naloxone that can save a person's life during an opioid overdose. Naloxone has been available without a prescription in the U.S. since last year. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a partnership with Amneal Pharmaceuticals on Monday. The company will sell naloxone packs to the state at a 40% discount. The naloxone eventually will be available under the CalRx label. California will give away the naloxone for free to colleges, universities and community organizations.

A new study finds little change in the number of people taking a key medicine for opioid addiction even though it’s now easier for doctors to prescribe it. The findings were published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers looked at what happened after the U.S. government lifted an obstacle to buprenorphine prescribing early last year. It's no longer required for prescribers to get a special waiver. The researchers said it may take more than one year to see a bigger increase in patients treated with the medicine, which helps with cravings.

It’s easier than ever for doctors to prescribe buprenorphine, a gold standard medicine for opioid addiction, since the U.S. government lifted barriers in January 2023. But despite the looser restrictions and a continuing overdose crisis, a new study finds little change in the number of patients taking the medication, according to findings published Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in the New England Journal of Medicine. FILE - Then Attorney General William Barr appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, May 1, 2019. A congressional committee is accusing China of fueling the fentanyl crisis in the U.S. A report released Tuesday by a House select committee says China is directly subsidizing the manufacturing of materials used by drug traffickers to make fentanyl outside the country. Barr says the committee’s report “uncovered persuasive evidence” that China’s government is “knee deep” in sponsoring and facilitating the export of fentanyl precursors. (AP Photo/J.
