ASSATEAGUE, Md., Va. - The National Park Service has announced that the Assateague Island Visitor Center in Maryland and the Toms Cove Visitor Center in Virginia are now cashless.
Entrance passes and donations at these locations will be card only starting today, June 16th, according to the National Park Service.
Cash entrance fees or donations for the Maryland side of the park can be paid for in cash by visiting the Ranger Station.
The Assateague Island National Seashore said in a Facebook post that the transition is occurring in compliance with the U.S. Treasury to reduce check and cash collection throughout the National Parks. The reduction is aimed to improve efficiencies and reduce risk in fee collection, while reducing Park operating costs.
This change applies only to the National Park System, so the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which is operated by the US Fish and WIldlife Service, will not be affected.
