Sydney McBroom Record Catfish

Sydney McBroom, an angler from Bridgeville, Delaware, with his 53-pound record-breaking blue catfish after weighing it at Lewes Harbour Marina.

LEWES, Del. – Less than a month after the last record catch, a bigger blue catfish has tipped the scales in Delaware.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) announced yesterday that Sydney McBroom, of Bridgeville, made the record catch on the Nanticoke River the morning of Sept. 22.

At 53 pounds and 46.5 inches, DNREC says it’s the largest freshwater fish caught in the history of Delaware’s sport fishing records – and it was no small feat. McBroom said he wrestled the catfish over the boat’s edge after luring it with a whole bluegill.

The record was certified by Delaware Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife Police Cpl. Kyle Wharton at Lewes Harbour Marina, shattering the previous record by more than 4.5 pounds.
