Charter Boat Takes Delmarva Veterans For A Ride On The Chesapeake Bay

(WBOC).

Kent Island, Md. - Around 15 veterans boarded a charter boat in Queen Anne's County Monday to take a ride around the Chesapeake Bay.

Organizers of this excursion say it was a chance for those who served our country to bond and share stories.

The veterans took to the water aboard the Chasin' Tail charter boat.

Fred McNeil with Centreville Veterans Information Center [CVIC] says today's ride hit home for the charter boat captain Brandon Moore.

Fred McNeil says, "His dad was in the Airforce in Thailand and he said 'You know what, one of the best things for veterans is just to get out and away from all the troubles and woes and get out on the water and relax."

Veterans also shared their stories of who they were and what they did while they were in the military.

Cynthia Annette fought for the U.S. Navy in 1979-1999. She says, "I was a prison escort for the Navy. What we did was we worked and people that had gone A-wall and things like that we became investigators. We found them through investigative techniques and then we'd have to go pick them up and return them to their original duty station."

Vietnam veteran Bob Nilsson says he's needed an afternoon like this, for quite a while. "When I got back, about the only person I could speak to about my experiences in Vietnam was my wife. And for 20-25 years, we had to basically keep it locked in a box. You couldn't talk to anybody about what you had done in Vietnam. In fact, it wasn't until the mid-80s that I couldn't even put it in the resume that I had been in the Marine Corps in Vietnam." He added, "It's great now that they're getting together and socializing."

Marine Corps veteran Ernest Hawkins Jr. says today was the second time he's ever met fellow veterans. "It seems like I've known these guys forever. We talk the same talk. Not necessarily military talk but you just talk about life in general. But they make you feel comfortable. They make you feel at home."

McNeil says their organization CVIC encourages vets to meet for coffee and such weekly, but this event was the first ever. He says Chasin' Tail charters made sure it was free for veterans.
