remembering 9/11

DELMARVA– Communities across Delmarva are marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, from memorial blood drives to remembrance ceremonies featuring guest speakers.

Commemorations planned across the peninsula include:

  • Ocean City Fire Department members, state and local leaders, survivors and more will gather at the boardwalk Firefighter Memorial for a ceremony starting at 8:45 a.m.
  • Ocean View: VFW Post 7234 will host a memorial ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. featuring a guest speaker who worked in New York on 9/11 -- and later served in the FBI. That will include an honor guard rifle volley, commemorative bell tolling and taps. Attendees are asked to arrive by 8 a.m.
  • Smyrna: Citizens Hose Company will host Delaware Emergency Management Agency Director AJ Schall in a memorial event following a concert by the fire company's band at 6:30 p.m.
  • Camden: VFW Post 8801 will take part in a Walk for Veterans starting 1 p.m. at Little Creek Fire Department -- walking to the Dover Probation and Parole Office.
  • Dover Motor Speedway will host its annual 9/11 blood drive from 9 am to 4 pm -- with registration required. That also gives donors a chance to drive on the racetrack.
  • Cambridge: American Legion Post 91 will partner with the Blood Bank of Delmarva to host a blood drive from noon to 5 pm.
  • Salisbury Fire Department will host a ceremony including a memorial tree planting -- with 25 trees marking 25 years of remembrance.
  • Georgetown: Cheer, Inc. will host a ceremony featuring survivor testimonies at 10 am.
  • Millsboro Police will host a service at 10 a.m. with Mayor Robert Mckee speaking on his experience as a tunnel manager for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on 9/11.
  • Milton: The Town will host a ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park. The Milton Fire Department will serve as a rain location, if necessary.
  • Chincoteague: A remembrance ceremony is planned at Robert Reed Park starting at 6 p.m. The Community Center will serve as a rain location, if needed.
  • Denton: The Caroline County Sheriff's Office will host a remembrance event at the County Courthouse starting at 8:30 a.m.
