Property Value Reassessment House

SUSSEX CO. DE -- The deadline for homeowners to file an appeal for their reassessed property values in Sussex County is Monday, March 31st.

Josh Milner, a Laurel homeowner, said he got his first assessment letter in the fall of 2024.

"The letter had a picture of my neighbor's house on it, not mine. They had my house listed as something it wasn't, as far as the number of bathrooms and bedrooms and stuff like that. So I wrote a letter to them to explain that they were wrong," Milner said.

Milner told WBOC he wishes the county was more communicative about the process, especially with a looming property tax increase for many neighbors.

"I mean, who likes more taxes? I wish it would have flat out stated how much it will be," Milner said. "I'm not paying all that much right now. It's one of the reasons I moved here."

Lower property taxes were also one of the reasons Michele Milway moved to Laurel. Milway said, however, that her new assessment does not change that.

"We're originally from Harford County Maryland, and our rates were much, much higher there," Milway said. "They're very comfortable here. The rates here are good."

Milway said she thinks the county is dealing with a lot when handling the reassessment process.

"We didn't get an awful lot of communication at the beginning, but we're seeing more of it now after the fact than before," Milway said. "Honestly, I think the county is doing very well."

Appeals must be filed and scheduled before the March 31st deadline either in-person, electronically, or by mail. Those interested in filing an appeal should visit the board assessment review page on Sussex County's website.
