DELAWARE — Local appliance retailers are preparing for possible price increases as the Trump administration is expected to announce a new wave of tariffs on imported goods Wednesday, April 2nd.
The proposed tariffs could affect both finished appliances made overseas and the raw materials used to manufacture them, such as steel and aluminum.
At Millman’s Appliances, owner Gary Chorman says they are doing what they can to prepare for potential cost increases.
"We really don't have a gauge on what to expect. But, certainly, I mean the rumors from most of the manufacturing representatives are 20% upwards in price increases we could be seeing," Chorman said.
Chorman added that his store has been stocking up on inventory in anticipation of the tariffs but acknowledged their limits.
"We've bought extra loads of inventory. But, of course, you can't buy everything."
Shore Appliance Connection is taking a similar approach to mitigate potential disruptions.
"We started ordering in bulk and storing it in our own facilities. So we're getting ready for it. We've gone so far as purchasing our own tractor-trailer to cut down the costs of transportation," said Brian Shedlock, the Lewes location’s general manager.
If the tariffs target parts and metals used in appliances, Shedlock warns that the effects could extend beyond just stock.
"We service our own products. That's another thing, the service could be affected down the road with parts, so we're also backing up our service department with parts."
