DELMARVA– Numerous cooling centers have been activated across the Delmarva Peninsula ahead of potentially record-breaking heat this week. 

Cooling centers provide an air conditioned space for community members to escape high temperatures and stay hydrated.

Officials in Delaware say cooling centers will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted, in the following areas:

Kent County

Smyrna State Service Center (100 Sunnyside Road)

Dover: Williams State Service Center (805 River Road)

Sussex County

Georgetown: Adams State Service Center (546 Bedford Street)

Laurel State Service Center (31039 N. Poplar Street)

Seaford: Shipley State Service Center (350 Virginia Avenue)

DHSS says the Williams State Service Center in Dover and the Adams State Service Center in Georgetown will remain open until 6 p.m. on July 1.

In Maryland, numerous counties had already announced open cooling centers by Tuesday afternoon.

Berlin, Ocean City & Ocean Pines branch libraries & the temporary Pocomoke & Snow Hill branch locations will be open Friday, July 3, but will be closed Saturday-Sunday, July 4-5.

The Worcester County Recreation Center in Snow Hill will be closed July 3-4, but will be open July 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bees is an Ocean City local familiar with Eastern Shore culture and history. She is passionate about audience engagement through community journalism, media literacy and language. Before joining WBOC, Bees was Editor in Chief of SU's student news outlet, The Flyer. She is thrilled to serve Delmarva as a newscast producer on WBOC's team.

Digital Content Producer

Sean joined WBOC as Digital Content Producer in February 2023. Originally from New Jersey, Sean graduated from Rutgers University with bachelor’s degrees in East Asian Studies and Religion. He has lived in New York, California, and Virginia before he and his wife finally found a place to permanently call home in Maryland. With family in Laurel, Ocean Pines, Berlin, and Captain’s Cove, Sean has deep ties to the Eastern Shore and is thrilled to be working at WBOC serving the community.
