Delaware Traffic

DELAWARE - The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is reporting a decrease in traffic deaths in 2023 from an unfortunate peak in 2022.

According to DelDOT, 137 fatalities were recorded in the state last year, a 16 percent decrease from 2022’s 164 deaths.

110 of the 137 reported traffic fatalities in 2023 were Delaware residents, according to data released by DelDOT.

Fatalities across all modes of transportation were down last year, with a 13 percent reduction in pedestrian deaths, 29 percent reduction in bicyclist deaths, and a 32 percent reduction in motorcycle deaths.

“Reducing fatalities on our roads has been a primary focus of DelDOT and our partner agencies and there is more work to do. We are working every day to make our roads safer for everyone,” said Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski.

Three people have died on Delaware roads so far in 2024, according to the Department.

DelDOT says that they, along with the Delaware State Police and the Office of Highway Safety, will hold a safety summit on April 17 in Wilmington to discuss efforts and initiatives to address traffic fatalities in Delaware.
