FEDERALSBURG, Md. - A new election system in Federalsburg is being put to the test on Tuesday.

In 200 years there has never been an African American on the council. Tuesday's election reflects months of effort to change that, where voters are now separated in two districts. People we spoke with say it's about time for a change.

Voters decided on council members and the mayor's seats. Two members of the yellow or predominantly white district, two members of the green or predominantly African American district, and a mayor will all be elected. [District map pictured above]

Voters say it's a bout time for representation.

Roberta Butler says, "This is a big deal for the town of Federalsburg. It's a big deal. I meant like I said we've never had anybody on the board. So, hopefully it will be a beginning of unity together."

"We could make history today. And we're gonna set the bar," says Frank Marcellino.

Some voters feel it'll introduce change for the community's young population.

Thomas Deshields Jr. says, "The young people get to see that anybody of color, especially black can be who they want to be."

Other hope it will bring a focus to specific areas in town.

Davonya Thomas, "I'm here to vote for change. It's time for a new beginning.  Everybody is tired of the same things. We need different matters addressed as far as these roads, as far as housing, as far as the things to do for kids."

An election changing a 200 year trend.
