Inmate Death Generic

WESTOVER, MD - The Maryland State Police (MSP) are investigating the death of an inmate in Somerset County’s Eastern Correctional Institute (ECI) with a fellow convict identified as a suspect.

MSP say they were contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit about an inmate death at ECI on Saturday, March 29.

Shane Lanham, 28, was found dead on the floor of a cell that was also occupied by another inmate, according to investigators. The identity of that fellow inmate has not yet been released and he has not yet been charged, though police say he has been identified as a suspect pending further investigation.

Maryland State Police are continuing the investigation into Lanham’s death and will provide their findings to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office.
