FENWICK ISLAND, Del. - Town leaders voted unanimously Friday to raise hourly parking rates by $1, increasing the cost from $3 to $4 an hour. The change will take effect ahead of the summer season.

“For one extra dollar an hour, I think it's a small price to pay,” said Goldie Radziewicz, a homeowner in Fenwick Island.

Town officials say the added revenue will fund street maintenance and help cover the cost of a new parking enforcement officer.

“I think it's good because those extra dollars go to maintain our streets. The tourists have a better maintained beach area,” Radziewicz said.

Not everyone is welcoming the change. Some visitors say the increase could push them toward other travel options.

“But if we can keep these costs down, that’d be wonderful. We also are more encouraged to ride the bus,” said Jill Siemon.

“To entice people to shop at your establishments—yeah, I think it's a give and take,” added Heather Kegerise, a friend of Siemon’s.

The increase applies only to hourly parking. Daily rates will remain at $25. Paid parking is enforced in areas marked with green ParkMobile signs.

Town officials say the rate hike keeps Fenwick Island competitive with other beach towns that charge similar prices. Paid parking begins May 15.
