GEORGETOWN, DE — Food trucks could soon be rolling back into downtown Georgetown, as town leaders consider reviving the pre-pandemic event known as “Food Truck Tuesday.”
At Monday night’s town council meeting, officials will discuss bringing the event back to East Market Street, with a proposal that would host food trucks on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from May through August.
The event, which hasn’t been held since 2019, is a collaboration between the Town of Georgetown and the Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. Linda Price, Chamber President, says they want to inject more life into the Circle and draw people back into the town center.
“They’re just passing through, so why not give them something to stop for?” said Price. “You know, when COVID hit, of course, a lot of the offices went to remote. And so now they're starting to come back to their offices. And we're trying to get people to come back and enjoy downtown."
If approved, four food trucks would set up during lunchtime hours, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., every other Tuesday starting in May. Organizers say they’ve already lined up some vendors for May and June and are planning a rotation of cuisines that won’t compete directly with local brick-and-mortar restaurants.
“The community has said 'we want to do stuff, help us do stuff, help have events that people can come up with families' Price added, "That’s what we’re gonna try to accomplish,”
Among the food vendors interested in potentially participating is Alvin Marshall, who runs the “2nd to None” food truck with his family.
“This will be a great thing for all of us. It gets our trucks exposed, our trucks out there, everybody looking for good food – and I feel we have real good food.”
The town council is expected to discuss the waiver approving the event at Monday nights meeting.
