DELMARVA - The National Weather Service confirmed another tornado hit Delmarva Thursday in Hazlettville, DE, bringing the total number of tornadoes that night up to four.
Officials say the Hazlettville tornado was an EF-0. They say the tornado's path length was about half a mile, mostly impacting a farm and adjacent fields along Bryants Corner Road. They say the most significant damage was done to the barn on the farm, ripping about half of the metal panels of the roof. Estimated peak winds were 70 to 80 miles per hour.
The other three tornadoes in Marydel and Dover, Delaware, and Barclay, Maryland, were all EF-1s.
In Marydel, NWS officials say the tornado started along Grygo Road, about a quarter of a mile from Mahan Corner Road. They say the tornado crossed Grygo Road and uprooted two "very large" oak trees that then fell on a home. The tornado headed into a wooded area, uprooting more trees down a narrow path. NWS says a barn and a shed on Parkers Chapel Road was destroyed as well. The tornado went 1.33 miles, according to NWS, and estimated peak winds were 90 to 100 miles per hour.
In Barclay, NWS says the tornado touched down in a wooded area next to a home near the intersection of Dell Foxx Road and Barclay Road. The tornado went across a bean field to a home on Benton Corner Road, where multiple trees snapped at the trunk. They say the tornado's path was half a mile long and estimated peak winds were 95 to 105 miles per hour.
In Dover, NWS says the tornado formed over open fields west of Wyoming Mill Road near Riverside Road, scarring crops. The tornado made direct contact with the Dover Little League baseball fields at Schutte Park, causing a lot of damage across two of the baseball diamonds. The tornado then hit the City of Dover VanSant Generating Station, went through a tree line, and hit a factory warehouse, where NWS says some of the worst damage happened. Two concrete block walls collapsed, some trailers were sent tumbling, and some of the metal roof came off. They say the damage to this building confirmed the max wind gusts of a high-end EF-1. The tornado zig-zagged through the main downtown area of Dover, where it weakened. It took down a few trees before moving along Park Drive and Kings Highway. Officials say as it approached the intersection of Kings Highway and North Dupont Highway, it intensified again and reached a second peak intensity, peeling off half the roof of a motel, damaging the roof of the motel next door, and taking down two business signs. NWS says this roof damage was the secondar confirmation of max wind gusts of a high-end EF-1. Its estimated peak winds were 100 to 110 miles per hour, and it went 3.2 miles, according to NWS officials.
Thankfully, the National Weather Service says there were no reported injuries or deaths from any of the confirmed tornadoes on Delmarva.
