LAUREL, DE -- Neighbors along West Seventh Street told WBOC that drivers often speed down their street. While town leaders have installed two temporary speed bumps, some homeowners say they'd like to see a permanent solution.
Suzette Carter lives along the road and said she often sees the speeders from her front porch.
"It worries me 'cause there are kids that play out here," Carter said. "The cars can come down so fast."
Carter said the temporary speedbumps have had a positive impact on the problem. However, said the speed bumps were removed during the winter. Carter said she'd like to see something more consistent.
"They put the speed bumps in, and then they take them out," Carter said. "If you put them up one minute and then you take them down, people are just gonna start speeding again."
Other neighbors also expressed concern over the speeding problem Friday. Ja'Haziel Young said she often rides her bike with her younger siblings along the road. Young said, last week, her brother was hit by a car while riding on his bike.
"I couldn't really do anything 'cause I was in the backyard," Young said. "He was okay, but I was so scared cause anything could have happened to him."
Incidents like that are why Isaiah Weatherspoon, who lives next door to Young, said he often does not let his kids play out front.
"You never know what could happen," Weatherspoon said. "Nobody is paying attention when they're speeding through here."
Weatherspoon said he's hopeful for a permanent solution.
"The speedbumps should definitely be permanent," Weatherspoon said. "And there should be more. There's one on the left, one on the right, and there should be one in the middle too. That's where a majority of the houses are."
Neighbors involved with installing the temporary speedbumps told WBOC the speedbumps have, overall, had a positive effect on the problem. However, they said they have not completely curbed speeding in the area. Those neighbors said some steps moving forward could include adding additional speedbumps to the road, as well as adding some to neighboring roads that also see speeders.
Town officials in Laurel said the temporary speedbumps, and requests for future upgrades, will be discussed at their council meeting on Monday, April 21st.
