Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Hosting COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic

SALISBURY Md. - With Christmas just three days away many people will be traveling in the next 48 hours to spend time with friends and family. But there is concern about the spread of the Omicron variant pushing some people to get vaccinated. Jonmel Davenport got her booster shot Wednesday and says she felt obligated to.

“I think it's our duty to one another just as American citizens and just as people to try and keep each other as safe as possible, so I am definitely going to get my booster today in order to aid in that effort. I would hate to do anything that would harm anyone else,” Davenport said.

In the last 24 hours Maryland added over 4,000 COVID cases. The positivity rate for the state is now over 12 percent and has nearly doubled since early December. Travis Brown with the Worcester County Health Department says the uptick could be because more people are traveling this year.

“I think with the uptick, it's pretty similar to what we saw last year, maybe a little bit more but just because more people are traveling more. Traveling is of course a big chance for spreading it into different areas,” Brown said.

According to the New York Times Worcester and Wicomico county's positivity rate are both under 10 percent, but people like Sue Ralph are still taking precautions.

“I am still going to wear my mask, I am still going to be careful because I do not want to get sick period. You know, cold or anything else, I got the flu vaccine,” Ralph said.

Health officials recommend layered protection like wearing masks, staying socially distanced and getting tested before seeing family.
