DEWEY BEACH, Del. - A new miniature golf course is getting ready to open by the beach. Nick's Dewey Dino Golf is planned to fit in nicely where Ed's Chicken and Crabs used to be. While many locals welcome it, some are still skeptical about the size of the space and available parking around the establishment. 18 tables used to seat customers at Ed’s Chicken and Crabs on Swedes Street, but that building went up in flames in 2016
when a drunk driver crashed into itand ruptured a gas line. Now 18 holes will make up Nick’s Dewey Dino Golf course. Nick Geracimos, who owns five
Nick's Mini Golflocations in Ocean City, says this site is a perfect fit. "Just being on Route 1, anyone coming into Dewey Beach or anyone going south, they’re going to go right past it," he says. Gary Winthrope of Dewey Beach says he misses the restaurant and Jolko Bradley of Bethany Beach questions whether or not the restaurant space is suitable for mini golf. “The holes are just going to have to be small," Bradley says. “Parking may be a little issue.” Geracimos says he'll use a little bit of elevation in the course design. "Just to kind of break up the course instead of it being flat," he says. Mayor TJ Redefer doesn’t see parking as a challenge either. “Most of the people that come to the town put their car wherever they’re parking it and walk for the week, so I don’t see it as a huge problem for this location, especially for the center of the town where this is located," he says. Commissioner Paul Bauer confirms that a mini golf course already meets the zoning requirements. “It was zoned commercial so there was no zoning issue putting another business in there," he says. "It’s not going to be another restaurant, but this is sort of an adjunct, it’s more things to do, it keeps people in town." Locals agree that mini golf will keep people of all ages in town. “Down in Rehoboth there’s a lot to do, but here this would make it better for younger kids," Bradley says. Geracimos says the plan is to wait until the busy summer season is over before beginning construction. He says they’ll start building the course in September and that it’s expected to open later in the fall. Once its up and running, Nick's Dewey Dino Golf will operate 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
