SALISBURY, Md. - Local shelters are full and in high demand due to colder temperatures and the pandemic. The Halo Center of Hope in Salisbury shows us how it's working through the challenges.
Celeste Savage, the Executive Director of HALO says phones have not stopped ringing and that they are in more need than ever. Adding that they have not been able to house as many people as before because of the pandemic.
"We used to be able to house up to about 100 people. We are keeping it pretty close to about 40 in both shelters now," explained Savage.
The shelter set a fundraiser goal of 3 million dollars. Savage says the money will go towards several renovations such as a new roof. The men's bathroom and shower project are already in the works.
"We opened the men's shelter in 2014 without a shower. With our 'Working Towards Success' program we need these guys to be able to take a shower and feel good about themselves," said Savage.
She adds that the facility could be ready as soon as the end of January 2021.
"We'll be able to open the facility for any of those who are on the street. So any of the homeless who are in the encampments are going to be able to come over and use the facility," said Savage.
Food distributions have also changed. Visitors can no longer be served at a table. Instead, they receive carry-out meals.
However, none of the work is possible without volunteers.
"We have to do that with volunteers and we're very short-handed. The pandemic has knocked us down again," said Savage.
Savage adds that by coming together we are all stronger during the difficult times.
"It's uplifting for us to know that we have a place here that they can be safe, they can be warm, they can be fed. I'm just thankful that I feel like HALO is going to be here to help that need," added Savage.
