Restaurants and Law Enforcement on Delmarva Prepare for 'Cinco de Mayo' Weekend

 

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- It'll be a busy weekend on Delmarva with the celebrations of Cinco de Mayo this Sunday.

"It's one of our busiest days of the year," says Isabel Berrueta, owner of Tacos Chabelita in Laurel.

Berrueta says they'll have all their staff in this Sunday, they've also ordered extra food and alcohol for the holiday.

"Everyone wants to be Mexican on Cinco de Mayo. We're also celebrating our 5th Anniversary today, it's going to be a busy weekend," she adds.

Meanwhile, in Somerset County, troopers with Maryland State Police are also gearing up for a busy weekend.

"People are coming down from Baltimore, Pennsylvania, New York and then add on top of that Cinco de Mayo, It's going to be a busy weekend," says First Sgt. Jonathan Johnson.

Maryland State Police are urging those who plan to celebrate with alcohol to be safe and smart and avoid impaired and distracted driving.

"We will have all of our officers on the streets trying to keep everyone safe," adds Sgt. Johnson.

According to Maryland State Police, initiatives will include saturation patrols in areas known to have a higher number of DUI crashes or arrests and sobriety checkpoints.

For the Cinco de Mayo weekend of 2018, troopers made 119 DUI arrests, 35 criminal arrests and 20 controlled dangerous substance arrests while also issuing 861 speeding citations.
