CRISFIELD, Md.- The city of Crisfield was notified by the Somerset County Department of Emergency Services that the flooding that occurred Friday will continue overnight with the next high tide.
The city says areas that normally experience street flooding during routine storms will see a greater volume of water covering streets and properties. Accordingly, the city has taken the following steps to assist residents:
- The parking lot at Carvel Hall will be available for public parking for those needing to move their personal vehicles to high ground. The gate will be open by 4 p.m. Friday and will remain open until the last car has been removed. Please park only where indicated, do not block other vehicles and understand that this service is being offered at your own risk.
- Sand and sand bags will be made available in limited numbers for the protection of commercial buildings and residential structures. Empty sand bags may be collected at City Hall, 319 West Main St. until 4 p.m. After that, you may get them at the headquarters of the Lower Somerset Ambulance Squad. Initially, the city will provide up to 5 bags to a location as long as quantities last. If more are needed, they will accommodate those that need them.
- Sand, free to the public, will be available outside Carvel Hall by 4:30 p.m. Friday, as well. Take only as much as you need and be considerate of your neighbors.
Rick Pollitt, Crisfield City Manager, says streets subject to heavy flooding will be closed to through-traffic upon the judgment of the Crisfield Police Department & Public Works.
Pollitt says speeding through flooded streets will not be tolerated because it will cause damage to homes and businesses and police have been instructed to enforce that policy.
