GEORGETOWN, Del. - Sussex County Vocational Technical School District says the opening of its new Sussex Technical High School has been pushed back by one year.

District officials announced the new school is now expected to open in September 2028 instead of the previously projected September 2027.

According to the district, the revised timeline is largely due to a decision to move forward with an alternative construction plan that will increase the building's capacity to 1,800 students. Current enrollment at Sussex Technical High School is approximately 1,375 students.

District officials also cited weather-related delays as a factor, with 65 workdays lost during the winter due to extreme weather conditions.

The district's Construction Committee was informed of the updated timeline last week.

Superintendent Kevin Carson said the district wants to ensure the building is fully completed and prepared before students and staff move into the new facility.

"The school needs to be open after it has been commissioned and prepared for the massive move from the current Sussex Tech High School," Carson said in a statement. "In addition, while we want everything completed in a timely manner, we want the building to be completely ready before we take occupancy."

The district says it will continue working closely with the project’s construction manager and provide updates to the community as construction progresses.
