FISHING CREEK, MD - The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating an oxygen tank explosion that occurred in Dorchester County on Saturday night.
The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal responded to Hoopers Island Road in Fishing Creek, Maryland around 7:30pm for an oxygen tank rupture/explosion.
Fire officials say a large oxygen tank (used for a torch) ruptured "sending it through the roof of an old unoccupied building at the location". According to the state fire marshal, there had been floods in the area where the bottom of the tank had sat. It had rusted and caused it to weaken.
There was no evidence that the fire within the structure or the top of the tank had been tampered with.
The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal says estimated losses are $8,5000.
The preliminary cause of the rupture is under investigation.
