LAUREL, Del.- Three people had to be rushed to the hospital after a mail truck and a van collided on SR 24 in Laurel late Monday afternoon.

Delaware State Police said it happened shortly after 5 p.m., when a Ram ProMaster 2500 series van was traveling eastbound on Laurel Road (SR 24). Police said that meantime, a U.S. Postal Service mail delivery truck was traveling westbound on Laurel Road, just east of Prettyman Avenue. For unknown reasons, the driver of the mail truck crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane of travel, according to police. The vehicles collided in a near head-on collision within the westbound lane of travel.  The driver of the mail truck was removed by bystanders before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

The driver of the Ram, a 44-year-old man from Millsboro, Del., and a male passenger from Frankford, Del., were properly restrained.  They were both transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and treated for  minor injuries before being released. 

The driver of the mail truck, a 40-year-old man from Salisbury, Md., was properly restrained.  He was transported to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

Laurel Road in the area of Prettyman Avenue was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
