Delaware Coastal Airport Expecting New Hangars

GEORGETOWN, Del. - More economic development in Sussex County as County Council approves some additions to the airport in Georgetown.

The hope is new hangars will increase air traffic at the airport. The airport manager told WBOC this development is expected to increase aircraft operations by 10%.

Delaware Coastal Airport has been home to privately owned aircraft for years, but finding a spot to park your plane indoors can be a challenge.

Airport Manager Robert Bryant said the addition of two hangars aims to fix that, "To be able to park these aircraft, keep them out of the weather, and just make them accessible to the aircraft owner is what makes this airport such an ideal location to have facilities like these two 10,000 sq ft hangars," Bryant said.

Schell Brothers VP of Operations tells WBOC the company plans to rent out space for aircraft storage in one of the hangars, and have "open shop maintenance" in the other.

Lane Deleon flies in and out of Georgetown all the time. He says space like this will mean good things for the future.

"The location of the airport is very good, it's near Lewes and Rehoboth, where people want to come and vacation," he said, "And I think, getting the ball rolling and having new hangars there can definitely spark the interest of other people, maybe utilizing the land better, and really build this airport up to be able to give aircraft owners what they need."

With County Council's approval, Schell Brothers says they are ready for takeoff, and excited to bring the much needed hangars to Georgetown.

The Airport Manager says they are still waiting on FAA approval for the master plan, but believes construction could begin as early as this summer.
