Future of Dolles Sign Still up for Discussion

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- The iconic Dolles sign in Rehoboth Beach is officially being taken down from its current location. But, the future placement and ownership of the sign is still up in the air.

In the Rehoboth Beach mayor and commissioners workshop on Monday, the future of the sign was discussed briefly. Mayor Stan Mills confirmed the sign is 100% coming down. Mills said the city is working with Dolles owner, Tom Iboch, to plan the sign's relocation. It is still unknown whether the city or Iboch will pay for the sign's removal.

A highly probable location for the Dolles sign is at the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. The board of directors of the Historical Society told the city they would gladly accept the artifact. The sign would either be placed on the roof of the museum or along the museum's property.

"The historical society met, and they are very receptive to receiving the sign on top of their building as long as it doesn't mess up their roofing," Mayor Mills explained.

The city has put in a request for the sign manufacturer to conduct a feasibility study of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society's roof. Mills said he is hoping the study will be completed by next week, so the future of the sign can be discussed in more detail at the next regular meeting.

Currently, there is no set date for the removal of the sign. However, there is an agreement between Iboch and the buildings news owner that the sign must be removed by the end of the year.

Since the first announcement of the removal of the iconic Dolles sign, the public continues to be upset with the loss of such a landmark.

"It's part of the boardwalk and its so sad to see it go. In fact I took a picture of it, so I can show my daughters before it goes away," said a boardwalk visitor." Um, I just hate to see it go."
