LEWES, Del.- Cape Henlopen High School graduate turned country superstar Jimmie Allen will serve as Cape's virtual commencement speaker this June.
Principal Nikki Miller and Allen made the announcement in a video posted to the district's page on Wednesday morning. While Allen's speech isn't until June 9th, he's already offering some words of wisdom to the Class of 2020 Vikings.
"I remember being a student in 2004, graduating and trying to plan my life with everything I wanted to do but trying to fight all the stereotypes that come with being from Delaware," he says. "But it goes to show: it doesn't really matter where you're from. It's your work ethic."
Allen graduated in 2004 and has gone on to be a platinum-selling country singer and songwriter. Two of Allen's songs-- "Best Shot" and "Make Me Want To" have hit number one on the Billboard chart.
Cape's virtual commencement is scheduled for June 9th at 6:30 p.m. The district has plans to have an in-person ceremony when social distancing restrictions are lifted.
