MILLSBORO, Del. - Golf carts are a fun way of getting around, but they are not allowed on public roads in Delaware.
Plantation Lakes in Millsboro is hoping to change that for their neighborhood.
There would need to be a change in the town charter to allow the carts, even just in that community, because most of the roads in Plantation Lakes are maintained by the Town of Millsboro, which means they follow state regulations.
The Home Owners Association says, because of that, they are leaving the golf cart debate up to the town, and Plantation Lakes residents.
Charlie Guggenheimer is one of those residents. He says golf carts aren't a problem to him.
"I don't think it would affect anybody here that much to have people with golf carts going around," Guggenheimer said, "I mean, it isn't like they're gonna block the street, or keep anybody from driving around here, delivering packages and so on. There's just gonna be another vehicle on the road, just like if they were on a bicycle or a non-motorized vehicle."
But others like Stan Kucharski say the carts need to be kept safe, if they are eventually allowed.
He said, "You'll see some young kids for, I don't know what reason, but the parents are letting them take out the golf cart, and they fly up and down the road and have no regard for speed or danger or possibly flipping or anything."
The decision is ultimately up to the Town of Millsboro, but Kucharski knows how important it is to his neighbors.
"If they see fit that it's a safety issue, and they want to do away with it, then that's up to them, but they'll be a lot of disappointed cart owners in the neighborhood that will kinda frown on it," he said.
Residents are only hoping to drive the carts throughout the Plantation Lakes community, but Millsboro Police Chief Brian Calloway says exclusive permissions like that could cause some issues.
He said, "There are some concerns saying, 'okay, is that necessarily fair to all residents of Millsboro?' What happens if another resident lives adjacent to our Dairy Queen, and wants to take their family on a public street here in Millsboro? Should they also be allowed to do that?"
The Millsboro Town Council has heard arguments for and against the golf cart change. Now, the next Council meeting is May 3rd, and the Town Manager says they are expected to decide on the golf cart debate then.
