WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del) released the following statement ahead of several planned protests throughout Delaware this weekend
“The protests that have taken place across the country over the past week are unlike any in a generation. Americans are not just speaking out in historic numbers, they are demanding real changes to our culture and our laws.
“In Delaware, peaceful protestors have inspired our state, given voice to often-ignored communities, and started the process of real, structural change. As several more protests are scheduled to take place this weekend, I urge Delawareans to make their voices heard forcefully and loudly, safely and peacefully.
“I have spent the last two weeks listening as much as possible to the tens of thousands of Delawareans who deserve to finally be heard and respected. I’ve spoken with community leaders, pastors, and protestors in the street about what change they believe is necessary, and in Washington, I’m doing everything I can to bring about that change. I’m working with members of the Senate and House to shape bills that will increase accountability for law enforcement and I’m working to address persistent issues like access to health care and economic opportunity that disproportionately impact communities of color.
“Our country has an historic opportunity in this moment to fix broken systems, rewrite unjust laws, and remake our culture for the better. We have to seize this moment and demand with our words and votes that real change finally happens.”
