Shelter Aimed at Aiding Female Veterans Opens in Smyrna

SMYRNA, De. - A new shelter in Smyrna is aiming to provide refuge and support for women who have served our country.

Eden Veterans Refuge has been in the works for over a year, but Monday's grand opening is the first step in providing a safe space for female veterans who may be experiencing difficult times, as well as their children.

"Our mission here is really to provide an avenue, an outlet for women, and women with children. And part of that mission is to understand that upon discharge or certainly just in everyday life, there's a need sometimes for a helping hand," explained Michael McConnell, co-founder of Eden Veterans Refuge and VFW Post 3832.  A recent study by the

Wounded Warriors Project

found female veterans face additional life challenges to their male counterparts in transitioning to civilian life, accessing care, and receiving quality care for their needs. The study also found women are more likely to feel isolated in the veteran community, and that can create mental health challenges such as anxiety. Tyshee Jackson, who is leading the charge as director of Eden Veterans Refuge, says she wants this space to feel like home, and provide whatever it's occupants may need.  "I wanted to start here to be the example of what can be done if we work together to succeed. And that's an important factor, you know, making the ladies know that there is a family - even if they don't have one, that's not biologically there, they may be by themselves, you know lost family in the service. Knowing that there is a family here a community that is family that can help them succeed in life, and that's the most important thing," explained Jackson, a native of Smyrna. The refuge has opportunities for skills and job training, an entrepreneurial program, counseling, as well as food and clothing assistance.  "Most programs out there focus on job training. And although that's part of our program, entrepreneurship is at a different level. It really is trying to empower women to take ownership of not only their business life, but their personal finances, so that maybe financial information, financial security, how to invest, how to start your own business," explained McConnell. The home is still a work in progress, as Jackson says they are currently fundraising to continue the renovation of more bedrooms. There is already a waiting list for assistance, and soon the first occupants will move in. At capacity, it can hold 6 women and 5 children.  Eden Veterans Refuge is accepting donations of food, clothing, monetary, and more.
