Updated: Possible Tornado Passes Through Milford Area

HARRINGTON, Del.- A possible tornado passed through the Milford area late Thursday afternoon, leaving behind uprooted trees, torn-up roofs and scattered debris.

Meteorologist Mike Lichniak says the tornado warning was issued at 4:57 p.m. The possible tornado started in Harrington and moved just north of Milford. The storm then passed near Shockley Road, just east of Milford.

The path of the storm continued toward Slaughter Beach, before getting smaller as it moved out over the Delaware Bay, according to Lichniak.

Lexi Shockley lives in the path of Thursday's storm. She was home alone when the storm started to turn destructive.

"After it rained outside for a couple minutes, I went into the living room to see what was happening, and the grill hit our window, and that's when I knew it was going to get really bad," she said.

Shockley called her mother, who told her to hide inside the bathtub of their bathroom. But Shockey said the hiding spot did not make the situation any less scary.

"The bad thing was, we were constantly losing connection," Shockley said. "So she was panicking, I couldn't really help her, and then I was on my way here and it was like taking forever because all the trees were down and I had to keep taking detours."

Shockley was OK, but her neighbors' houses were not.

Bob Richard said his house took a big hit.

"It tore one side of my house, and it did a little damage to this tree, my RV, and a lot of my neighbors...and from what I understand, nobody was hurt, and that's the main thing," Richard said.

And while he considers himself lucky, Richard hopes he will have somewhere to sleep Friday night.

"I guess I can say, compared to the lady next door, I'm pretty lucky," Richard said. "I lost a couple trees and one side of my house has major damage. They may want me to not stay here tonight, but I'd like to stay here. I have no other place, really, to go."

Thursday's storm brought with it thousands of reported power outages. Utility crews worked quickly throughout the evening to restore power to affected areas.

The National Weather Service said in a Tweet that it was sending a team to the Harrington, Milford, and Slaughter Beach area on Friday afternoon to conduct a storm damage survey.
