ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CBS/WBOC)- A 1-year-old Maryland boy has died from COVID-19, the youngest victim of the pandemic in the state, Gov. Larry Hogan said Tuesday.
Hogan made the announcement during a news conference late Tuesday afternoon. Additional details about the child's death were not immediately available.
On Monday, the state reported its first death of a child younger than 10. The child died on Sunday but their death was reported on Monday.
Hogan spoke on the same day the state surpassed a total of 200,000 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. On Tuesday, the state reported its third-highest daily case increase with 2,765 new cases reported, bringing the state’s total to 201,135 (see data chart below).
The governor also said the current surge of COVID-19 cases is taking a toll on the state's hospitals, and announced measures to ensure every Marylander who needs a hospital bed gets one.
Accordign to Hogan, the state has activated the Maryland Medical Reserve Corps, and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems instituted a program to allow medical and nursing students to become part of this staffing surge.
Hogan said that in November, Maryland increased the capacity of alternate care sites, provided additional clinical care and staffing support to nursing homes, and issued an order limiting hospital visitation and guidance on elective procedures.
"The current surge is not only increasing the burden on our health care system and filling available hospital beds, but it is also affecting our health care workers who are already spread thin and operating under immense strain and stress," the governor said.
