Not-For-Profit Seeks to Brighten up Berlin Basketball Courts

BERLIN, Md.- Berlin non-profit 'We Heart Berlin' wants to transform the Henry Park basketball courts into an art installation by this Fall according to the organization's president Tony Weeg.

The organization's goal is to bring a greater sense of pride to the community with the art work through painting and resurfacing the courts, but it must be approved by town council first.

A fundraiser has been started to support the effort.

It has raised about $1,400 as of Tuesday, July 20 and a change.org petition was also started by another one of the organizers already garnering close to its 200-signature goal.

The town is considering all angles, before voting at its next town meeting on Monday.

"They're also obviously going to be concerned that it's a project that is welcomed by the community, but they will also what to know about future maintenance, once the paint starts to wear and that kind of thing, how that will be handled," said Mary Bohlen, Berlin Deputy Town Administrator.

Susan Bashore signed the petition Tuesday.

"I do see it as a positive move. There have been a lot of positive moves improving this town and I think that's one and in that area that is needed and so it's nice to know that they'll be something attractive there that will be used and enjoyed," said Bashore.

The Worcester County Arts Council is a major donor through the Community Arts Development Grant Program.

"It is building community pride. It is enhancing the engagement of the neighbors and people living in our community. It's just such a wonderful project adding to the beauty of the town," said Anna Mullis, Executive Director of the Worcester County Arts Council.

"The more color the better. We are all for the arts. Art is such a universal language that everybody will understand," said Mullis.
