CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. - The U.S. Coast Guard wants to promote safety when boating around Delmarva.
Chief Warrant Office John Colon from the Chincoteague Coast Guard station said once you're on board a charter boat, your life is in the crew's hands.
"So it's not uncommon for anybody who does chartering to have it requested to have them present that to those people so they can show that they reached the level of safety and knowledge to take passengers for hire," said Colon.
The U.S. Coast Guard is required to inspect charter boats, which can carry a number of risks including not providing enough safety equipment, supplies for boat repairs, and crews not being subject to pre-employment drug testing.
The Coast Guard will continue to regulate charter boats up and down Delmarva's coast.
