Rehoboth City Commissioners Meeting

REHOBOTH BEACH, DE — Rehoboth Beach began initial stages of discussions regarding a community benefits package proposed by US Wind. The offshore wind energy company has offered a $100,000 annual benefit for 20 years to each town involved in the deal.

At a  Rehoboth Beach Commissioners Workshop, commissioners heard from U.S Wind regarding the benefits package. The public also had the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed benefits. While discussions have started, a formal agreement is yet to be reached.

Under the presented terms, the towns accepting the benefits package cannot impede or delay the development of the wind farms, although they retain the right to withdraw from the deal at any time. If they do so, the only penalty  would be two years of back pay and to forego future payments.

Mayor Stan Mills clarified that accepting the agreement wouldn't restrict the town from expressing opinions on the offshore wind project.

"If the commissioners choose to accept this agreement, there is no language in the agreement that says we can't voice skepticism or support of the project. To me, the optics might be there, but I disagree with them," Mayor Mills stated.

The workshop primarily focused on the proposed community benefits and their perceived value to Rehoboth Beach.

Public opinions varied, with some expressing concerns about the terms of the contract. Allison Iavarone, GOP 14th District Chair, criticized the deal,

"I think the terms of the contract are one-sided. For $100,000, which is not a lot of money, you have to give up your right to suing, litigation. It's just a one-sided contract." said Iavarone.

David Stevenson, an opponent of the project and the signing, expressed satisfaction that the town, and Mayor Mills, are taking their time before making a decision.

"I think there's going to be a lot of public comments, and they need to take their time before they make decisions," he said.

The community benefits package from US Wind will be revisited at the January 19th Commissioners meeting, with the possibility of a vote.
