SALISBURY, Md. - A Salisbury man faces numerous drug charges following an investigation into retail thefts across Maryland and Delaware, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office says its Criminal Investigation Division identified Mark Jones as the primary suspect in numerous thefts targeting businesses in Wicomico County. Investigators believe the activity later expanded into Worcester and Somerset counties in Maryland and Sussex County, Delaware.
The value of the property believed to have been stolen remains under investigation but is estimated at between $50,000 and $100,000, authorities said.
On July 17, detectives learned Jones was reportedly staying at a Salisbury motel. Investigators conducting surveillance allegedly saw him leave a room carrying possibly stolen property before getting into a car driven by another person.
Detectives followed the car through Salisbury before stopping it. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a K-9 alerted police to the presence of narcotics, and a subsequent search uncovered a significant amount of suspected crack cocaine.
Jones was taken into custody without incident and charged with multiple controlled dangerous substance offenses. The Sheriff’s Office did not specify the individual charges in its release.
Detectives also recovered items believed to have been stolen from a Walmart in Pocomoke City.
