SALISBURY, MD - City of Salisbury officials have announced the restoration of traffic flow from Circle Avenue to U.S. Route 13 on Carroll Street and the reduction of the street’s “extra-wide” bike lanes.
In a press release sent Thursday, April 3, Salisbury officials said they had re-evaluated the 2022 redesign of Carroll Street and would be moving forward with restoring traffic flow.
"More than two years of practical experience and observation have shown the extra-wide bike paths installed in 2022 are underutilized, confuse drivers, and impede traffic flow," said Salisbury Mayor Randy Taylor. "The bike paths will remain, but they won't be as dominant as in the prior design. This will allow traffic to flow better while offering safety and accessibility to both cyclists and pedestrians."
Upon completion, Carroll Street will have two lanes in both directions for cars with arrows for guidance, according to the City. The two bike lanes will remain, officials say, but the separation between them and vehicular traffic will be reduced. Visible marking will denote pedestrian crossings.
"Carroll Street is a major City thoroughfare," Mayor Taylor added. "These are common-sense updates that reflect real-world usage, and they will help travelers move safely through our downtown."
The City of Salisbury expects the project to commence in this Spring and ask neighbors and drivers to expect minor disruptions as work is conducted.
