BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - Two people were killed Friday afternoon in a crash involving a car and a dump truck near Bridgeville, according to Delaware State Police.
The crash happened around 12:40 p.m. Sept. 11 on Seashore Highway near Oak Road.
Police said a Toyota Camry was traveling east on Seashore Highway as a Peterbilt dump truck approached from the opposite direction. For reasons still under investigation, police said the Camry crossed into the westbound lane and entered the path of the dump truck.
The front of the Camry struck the front of the Peterbilt. Following the collision, the dump truck became fully engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Camry, a 19-year-old Millsboro man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car, a 23-year-old woman from Honduras, was taken to an area hospital, where she later died.
Police are withholding their names until their families are notified.
The driver of the dump truck, a 58-year-old man from Ridgely, Maryland, was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police said a third vehicle, a Peterbilt tractor pulling a loaded car trailer, had been traveling behind the dump truck. Its driver avoided the collision and drove into a ditch. The driver was not injured.
Seashore Highway was closed for approximately five hours while investigators worked at the scene and the roadway was cleared.
The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash.
