Virginia State Police say the crash occurred around 4:16 p.m., at 16239 Lankford Highway, Nelsonia on November 21st.

State police say a 2021 Mazda CX30 crossed over into the southbound lane, for unknown reasons, and hit a 2021 Freightliner box truck head-on.

Police say the driver of the Mazda, 69-year-old Augusto Santos Aguilar of Tampa, Florida, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. His daughter, 17-year-old Marie Aguilar, died upon impact.

Police say the front seat passenger, wife and mother, Maria Jennifer Aguilar, was transported to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional in Salisbury with non-life threatening injuries.

A crash reconstruction team has been called to the scene to investigate the crash.

Authorities say the crash shutdown the northbound and southbound lanes. A detour was reportedly put in place to assist traffic control.
