BETHANY BEACH, DE - The jawbone of a whale has washed up on Bethany Beach according to the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute (MERR).

According to MERR the jawbone is about 12 feet long and “quite heavy.” Responders from MERR are currently attempting to load the bone and transport it back to the Institute for examination.

At this time, it is unknown what kind of whale the jawbone came from, but the Institute believes it to be from a type of baleen whale, which includes Humpback, Fin, and Gray whales. A DNA test may be conducted to establish the species, according to MERR.

MERR also says they may be in contact with the Smithsonian Institution to see if they would be interested in the jawbone.
